How the first apartment in Brooklyn ended up in a broklyn hotel
Double decker couches, twin-level bathrooms and a full kitchen have long been staples of Brooklyn’s skyline, but the apartment building at the heart of the city’s renaissance is now the subject of a new book about the transformation.
Dubbed Brooklyn Broklyn, the project was a joint venture between the New York State Housing Authority and Brooklyn Heights.
According to The Brok, its architects were inspired by the citys rich history of brokering and financing, and the apartment complex was built on the site of the old Broome Hotel, the first skyscraper built in the city.
Backed by a $100 million loan, the hotel opened in 1890 and is considered one of the most iconic structures in New York.
The complex’s residents have included movie star Leonardo DiCaprio, actor and writer Paul Rudd and rapper Killer Mike.
Bricky was officially opened in 2018.
After the construction of the hotel, the developer began working on a hotel and apartments complex for its first tenant, the now-defunct Brooklyn Heights Hospitality Company.
A few years later, the company relocated to the site.
Then, in 2019, the Brok acquired the hotel and its adjoining buildings for $150 million.
In the next few years, the developers were able to complete the complex and build another apartment complex on the property.
Now, Brok has been reborn as the first Brooklyn hotel to become a fully-fledged brokilly.
“We had been looking at Brooklyn for a long time, but now we finally had the opportunity to put it on the map,” Brok Properties president Joe Cziborra said.
Located on the east side of the Bronx, Brock’s latest incarnation is set to become the largest hotel in the area with 675 rooms and 6,500 square feet of living space.
“It is our intention to transform this landmark into something truly special for our guests,” Czabors said.
Brick’s first tenant was the now defunct Brooklyn Heights Hotel, which was a tenant at the site for more than 20 years before moving out in 2012.
Although the building was renovated to serve as a hotel, its design was inspired by other areas of the borough.
When the developers bought the building, they decided to put up a small bar and restaurant at the base of the complex to keep its character.
There’s also a rooftop garden and garden room.
Brok also renovated the hotel’s main entry, which is now an indoor pool.
And its newest addition is a small cinema, which has been transformed into a lounge.
As for the apartment, Broke Properties will be offering a range of luxury suites, including a three-bedroom unit for $1,600 a night.
This is a very different approach to Brok’s first iteration.
Before, the apartments had to be individually priced and had to go through a rigorous approval process.
Instead, they will be open to anyone and everyone.
With a new apartment complex set to open this year, the future of the Brooklyn Broke Hotel looks bright.
